"The shops are doing reasonably well but with the downloading onto cd sales have dropped. Its a fact.People have the equipment so everyone can download. Its not the fault of the people who download the music for if you sell the equipment what do you expect the people to do??"
Herman Chin-Loy

Maybe part of the problem could be solved if a minimum (aprox. 1% or 2%)of the total earnings of a big PC company goes straight to the music industry, so they can lower the prices in this market.

Leggo

Is it really stealing to download this music ?

Is it that you feel that the artists are not getting the royalties that they deserve ?

Do you think that the reggae artists who made these wonderful recordings fron yesteryear that are now considered "classic" ever got their just royalties when they originally recorded the sides ?

The artists were ripped off big time, they were ripped off by the record producers and they were ripped off by the record labels.

The artists accepted this as standard practice, they rarely complained as it didn`t get them anywhere, they were just happy to see their music and the message it carried reach its audience and make a difference to the lives of their fellow sufferers who endured the same poverty, cultural and political unrest that they did.

Do you think that when you see albums changing hands on ebay at £100+ a time that any of this money is getting back to the artist ? Well of cause it doesn`t. But no one takes and dim view of a sellar who profits in this way, they just call the buyer a mug for coughing up with that sort of cash.

Do you think that when an album is reissued on vinyl or CD that the artist is getting royalties from the reissue ? Well much of the time they don`t because back in those days (pre 1980`s) many artists settled for one off cash payment to cover their time spent in the studio. This enabled them to survive and put food on their table. Again the artist being ripped off. The exception to this rule being the big name artists who could call their own shots.

These artists when they made these records were not to know that years down the line the music they were recording would be classed as classic and be worth a small fortune to collectors.

Like I said its the record producers and the people who own the record labels who make the money. So why should we feel guilty when downloading music, whether legally or not, when the people who we are ripping off have made an art form of ripping off other people (the artists).

So bare this in mend when you shout that we are wrong, illegal and immoral to download music in this way. After all, i`m sure the artists (living and dead) would just be glad to see that their music is still being played today and giving us the same listening pleasure that it did to the people back in the day when it was recorded.

Leggo, one last thing. If you saw a £20.00 note laying in the road would you walk past and leave it because you knew that it was not yours or would you think yourself lucky, pick it up and go and enjoy your luck.

Nuff Said

Peace

I'm sorry but these are the most rediculous transparent arguements to justify one's own criminality that I have ever heard.

Of course the artists care if they get money. They aren't ONLY there to have their message heard! Let's take one of the most positive, upful, sincere artists around who cares greatly about his message...Luciano. Of course he wants his message to be heard, but he wants money too. Not because he's greedy, or because he cares more about money than his message, but because he supports a whole HEAP of poor people back in JA. And trust me, Luciano isn't the only artist who does this... MOST of them do. Downloading stuff that's out of print is one thing, but downloading music which is readily availabe is like taking the food out of the mouths of poor people back in Jamaica. You should all be ashamed.

Stop hiding behind your hippie/rasta "One Love, it's all about the message" rhetoric and admit you are thiefs.

I`m talking about music which is long out of print. If its available for sale through reputed sellars I would rather buy the item and have something more than just a track.

Artists back in the old days did not have the financial control over their music which they have today and they were ripped off.

Anyway the reggae being recorded today by Luciano et all is crap compared to what was out in the 70`s so you certainly wont see me "stealing" from these guys.

There is enough great music from the 70`s to look for without worrying about todays mediocrity that is Reggae / Regga / crap

Check your history

Wow! Music is in the ear of the beholder, but wow! Now I know there's no need to even continue this discussion. Seriously, ever think of doing stand up comedy? Catch you on the flipside bro.

Its good to get people going, probably was to strong a word when I said Luciano was crap. But as you say each to his own and I much rather search out obscure / rare / deleted music from the 70`s which you will rarely ever hear these days rather than listen to the likes of Luciano whose music is readily available to all.

I still say that I am not a theif nor a criminal for searching these items and I would still rather buy than download. But you have to take these old items in what ever format they come along in and the chance of pickling them up on vinyl / cd in most cases is zero.

Sorry if I offended you tingjunkie that was not the intention. Everyone has their own tastes, mine is the pre 80`s digital era when analogue was the mode, musicians played the instruments and dub ruled.
