Well, hopefully only a joke. Despite this dark and criminal minded period is one of the worst reasons for joking.

Actually I didn't make a joke. I just stated something that is actually part of what I believe the German national anthem, as my support for Germany who were about to enter the finals.
But indeed, let's keep all the other nonsense out, the joke is out. It was harmless and merely meant as such.
And yes Mark, I already downgraded the topic to a non sticky one. I don't want to keep being reminded how Germany stole our World Cup.

This has nothing to do with World War II and the Nazis.
These words are still part of Germany's national hymn.

We're lucky to live in a time when a world war can be considered history, and the details are a matter of research. I'm pretty sure that since the end of WWII (or certainly by the early 1950s) it's only the third stanza of the hymn that's officially considered the national anthem. That stanza starts with "Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit" (Unity and Justice and Freedom) instead of "Deutschland über alles" which starts the first stanza. Although the lyrics were composed in 1841 and had nothing to do with fascism, the first stanza was "edited out" because the lyrics seemed insensitive.

(The second stanza, also no longer part of the official national anthem, is about German women, loyalty, wine, and song....nothing about football, tho'.)
