My implication being that a lot of media players can't or won't handle flac or whatever other so called lossless formats that are available. So if it must be mp3 for the sake of widest compatibility it should be at the highest kbps rate - i.e. 320. Which is not the case with most digital music distributors, unfortunately.
I would guess that an oxymoron is called the same thing in a few other languages too - foremost Greek

well, you can download plugins to play .flac ,.ape or .wv files on winamp and windows media player......

that assumes that I would be using a Windows machine which I certainly would not!
I was thinking in terms of portable media players (iPods etc.) few of which support the lossless formats.
Of course you can always convert them to .wav or .aif
