I have a really interesting book about H.I.M that I found in my school's library by a Polish named Ryszard Kapuscinski. It's called "The Emperor," and is a long interview with Haile Selassie's court people, and close people to him after his death. Is intertesting because the people being interviewd are persecuted by the Ethiopians, so they hid from them.
Funny that I walked out with this book in my bag without realizing I left in there; the alarm from the library didn't go off and when I got home got a surprise book.
Maybe someone knows more about this book...

Oh no, not Kapuscinski again!

So many people are misled by this book ...
It is not a fact book, but a ficticious account. When doubts about accuracy in "The Emperor" arose Kapuscinski himself claimed the book wasn't really about Ethiopia, but an allegory on the situation in Poland. Probably Kapuscinski never interviewed any members of the Ethiopian court under Haile Selassie or if he met some he put words in their mouth they wouldn't have said.
Much of Kapuscinski's so called journalism seems to be characterised by exaggerations, half-truths and outright lies. For more information on Kapuscinski read the article by John Ryle:
http://www.richardwebster.net/johnryle.html
Also there was a biography published recently which also casts doubts on the amount of truth in Kapuscinski's reports. Or so one hears. Haven't read it myself yet.
If you want to read a good book on H.I.M. Haile Selassie I try "The Mission" by Hans Wilhelm Lockot.

nice, thanks for the heads up adilisha. I read a few chapters of the book and then got bored, it seemed to be too repetitive. This clears everything, I'll look for Hans Wilhelm then

I man give thanks for the John Ryle article.
Maybe three years ago I found _the Emperor_ translated to my native tongue from the discount bin of some bookstore. I read the book and was struck by a strong negative vibe, a definite intention to throw garbage. Still, as I couldn't find out the sources of information, I had to settle with I initial vibe. I remember being amused by the style of the book - the same ironic tone that was present all the time no matter what the initials of the current "informant" were. So it was the author all along. Here one may start drawing conspiracy theories about the vatican influence in Poland, the pope kissing a bomb meant for His Imperial Majesty, the Roman scheme to bring down the last place on earth that safeguards the true christianity as opposed to their catholic-satanic abomination...
Yet before _any_thing, the wicked have already lost.

The first thing that struck me with the book was that it mentioned that Selassie didn't know how to read, yet I saw him reading his famous speech in a video...
Thanks everyone for the heads up on the polish guy that shall not be mentioned, lol, and indeed the Ryle article clears alot of the misinformation found in the book.
