song ID

Post by myles »

From the late 70's - early 80's, sounds a bit Mighty Diamonds/Culture.ish
Only have a snippet recorded from radio DBC and think it must be called "Babylon Bridge"

Lyrics:
..yeh, wanna know, natty dread, how you come over woah ehha,
Babylon Bridge was burning down, man ah how you get over,
Babylon Bridge was burning down, man ah how you get over,
How you get over, how you how you get over, how you get over,
Whoa, wanna know.
A Rastaman is a peaceful man, Rastaman ain't no trouble no one, so you better stay far with your tribal war.
Down ina Babylon a very long time...

Jah love

Hmmm...that was my initial reaction too. But I'm not so sure unless Myles is way off target with those lyrics.

The Culture 12" on Errol T was titled Baldhead Bridge, and the words 'Babylon Bridge' only appear in Ranking Joe's DJ version. Here are their repeated lyrics:

"The Baldhead Bridge is falling down, falling down, falling down
The foolish man bridge is falling down
Jah Rastafari!"

[Sung to the tune of the old nursery rhyme 'London Bridge Is Falling Down'.]

Nope - the more I think about it, the less certain I am that we've ID'd this one.

No, it's not the Cultural Roots' tune.

After norseman's reply I checked it out and have to agree with VC.

And having relistened it's less Culture, no big harmonies, but a bit more Delroy Washington/Sylford Walker, lower voice with a high backing vocal "eeee" near the end

The lyrics are correct and basically repeat with slight variation ending with "keep your faith young man, keep your faith young man".

Chords are slow rootsy Am (x4) and Gm7 (x4) "chukka" all the way through.

Just checked VC's recommendation, not this one as sleng teng ses:

Thanks all for your help

I wonder if this track is actually called 'How you get over'. The reason I say this is that reading the lyrics I hear someone singing that line in my head.

They are definitely NOT from Culture's Baldhead Bridge.
