Studio One numbering

Post by leggo rocker »

Having a few copies of the same Lp but on different pressings I've noticed that the record number on one is for example SO LP 0014. Then the later pressing is say: SO LP 8014.

Does this indicate that the first is a first pressing and the latter is the 8th pressing?

One is the original Jamaican press in stereo, the other a UK mono pressing.

thanks, but what I was driving at is is there a 'system' to this numbering? Does it indicate chronological order?

Studio One's enumeration system has always been an erratic affair. There is no sure proof that any number following in logic order already means a later release.
Albums can be roughly sorted by the prefix, i.e. a 'CS' prefix hints to an earlier release than a 'SO' prefix, but I bet there are some records that don't follow that formula.
rougher yet

That's the way I suspected it might be, after all, most stuff to do with JA music publishing was erratic. Like two A side labels on one disk, etc.

I wonder why...

After researching Roots Knotty Roots discography to find the 70s stuff from Studio One I realised that the numbering on the matrix is not so erratic. At least for 70's singles the matrix numbering have a strong relation to dating. For this period I found it very useful to select records and I like to share my conclusions to anyone interested in this forum. Below is the matrix codes and the respective release year/period.

matrix No / years
CN - from 75 to 77 (The best sounding for me)
DSR 2000's - 76-81
DSR 3000 to 7000's - 80's
DSR 8000's and 9000's - 79
DSR CN - 71 to 73
DSR CS - 75 to 77
DSR JR - 74-75
SC - 77 to 78
FCD - 71 to 74, except FCD 7700 to 7881 that may be from 69 or 72.
JR - 70's
JRS - 70's
SO 0100 to 1990 - 70's
CD 1000 to 1800/>6000 - 72 or 78
C&N - 70 to 71

And these are the most popular 70's label from Studio One: Coxsone, Studio One, Winro, Iron Side, Forward, Budget, Bongo Man, Money Disc, Pot-o-Jam.
Hope yu all find it useful. Any corrections and comments appreciated.
