what pedals and settings to use for reggae?

Post by Tlatoni »

I play in a reggae band and im looking for a more roots sound. I currently have a les paul studio guitar and i use a Dunlop 95Q Crybaby Wah Wah Pedal. When we dub it out i use a little of delay with a Boss DD7 Digital Delay Pedal. I run this thru a fender deluxe 85. But I'm not satisfied with the chucks the and skanks, so i was wondering if i can get some help and support to better my sound.

Chucks, there are some techniques you can use whilst playing where by you dampen the string also in rythm with the chucks, the guys that really got that technique down were the ska guitarists, however imo chucks sound super nice going through a Fisher spring reverb, it gives them a nice watery sound and some extra brightness, you could also try a Phase shifter instead of a Wah maybe, Perry used a Mu-tron Bi-phase on a lot of his chucks, see - Living in dub http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTXGYqd91T0 (That's a space echo/Bi-phase) I just sold my Bi-phase to pay for a new desk and sold it for £650, cost a tad more than that though, but it's the ultimate vintage guitar pedal personally I'd go with a fisher to start of with though.

All effects are nice and some amps better than others, but the sound should ultimately be in the hands of the player! Look at all the reggae guitsy's through the years... always different guitars, amps, effets, etc.....

You should upload some of your own guitar that we can listen to and maybe an example of the sound you're looking for, that would be nice :)

I think your equipment is right. A Les Paul through a Fender can´t be wrong. And the Cry Wah is classic gear.
I would recommend the Bosss GT-6 guitar effects processor. You can use pre-sets. Or you can model your own sounds. You can buy it pre-owned for less money.

Many guitarists have nice gear except cables. Some use a GBP 10 cable to connect their Pauls, Strats to great amps.
A good cable is worth its money cause it provides dynamic sound. I play monster cables. Not cheap, BUT...very solid with a warm, wide, dynamic sound.

To improve skills I would listen to classic stuff. How does the guitarist do the chuckin? There are many styles. As shorter you can play the chord than better you are.

Good luck, best wishes!

Try to find an old Roland RV2 if you plan to play on stage. Good old sound with great quality.

Thanks for all the advise guys and i am really looking forward to bettering my sound. as far as the suggestions i have tried the Boss Gt 6 but i had so much trouble with it. i really didn't have a clue to know what to do with the settings. I'm planning on getting another one pretty soon and giving it another chance but i really do need some help with the settings.

do you use your fingers to do the skank? for me is the better way. The sound is on the player.

Maybe someone can tell you the better eq's for rythm guitar. And theres a lot of different skanks over reggae history, each one has a slightly different sound.
