Dub beginner

Post by Aussiemike »

Hi Folks,

I don't know why, but i sort of had the feeling that i should write something here. My story is that i grew up in London in the 70's, born in 71 to be precise and i emigrated to Australia about 15 years ago.

I have some vinyl albums and hundreds of CD's of all musical styles and some on the fringes of music, but you know in the last couple of years i've pretty well stopped listening to music, not even in the car on the way to work, i think i sort of lost the point of it all.

The good news is that i have discovered Dub, i always knew it was there, i did have the Lee perry - Arkology box set at one time and of course had some reggae and Ska albums but i never took much notice of Dub, to tell you the truth i kind of felt that my brain wasn't really wired the right way to appreciate it, in the same way i couldn't get Jazz, except some of the more accessible stuff.

I've been having a few problems, stress and some grief on the home front recently and have taken to the headphones and Youtube for a bit of sanctuary. I appreciate this isn't a forum for relationship matters but what i have found is that listening to Dub, plus a little bit of help from another area has calmed me to the point where a lot of my anger and resentment has simply fallen away and i can see more clearly where I'm going wrong. This nightly ritual has got us talking again because i'm more relaxed and not so defensive, so you could say Dub coupled with a very small amount of bush medicine is having a healing effect on our relationship and now things are looking up.

I just wanted to share that little positive story with you all, here are the two albums that are doing the particular trick for me now something has clicked and I've found the way into the music:

King Tubby meets the Rockers up town
Black Jade - Contempo. (Absolutely can't get enough of this album)

I also have Jackie Mittoo - Macka Fat, which i guess is more Roots? but i like a lot too.

See you at the Dub Station......:)

Smoking ganja and listening to dub normally rather ENDS relationships ;-) Nice to read it can be the other way around too.

A lovely post, AussieMike. I've always enjoyed dub but for the last few years it's more or less the only reggae I listen to in album format. I get enough vocals and deejays through singles/discos. But when I sit with some work or just relax at home it's always dub I draw for.

My most listened to dub albums for this last month have been:
Afrikan History (Mandingo LP)
Outernational Riddim (FORM LP)
The Message Dub Wise (FAB LP)
Dubd'sco Vol. 1 (Solomonic LP)
The War Is On Dub Style (Phil Pratt LP)

...and a fair amount of Shaka dub LP's.

Thanks,

I will definitely be checking those out, I got a bit of a start here on what to listen to. Tonight i've been listening to some more stuff, it seems anything with king tubby in the title seems decent.

Yes Mike - you'll probably like more works from Augustus Pablo and the Rockers crew such as Rockers Meets King Tubby's In A Fire House.

Tonight is Twinkle brothers, Dub massacre 1.

Dub Massacre 1 up to 3 are all fantastic. Even the later parts have their moments. I have doubles of some of them if you're after the LP's. Be aware that there are two different mixes out there of Dub Massacre Pt. 2
(the second mix has Remix stated on the sleeve).
