White artists recording reggae in JA

Post by Wake-Up-And-Live »

Martha Velez came to Jamaica in 1975 and recorded an album with The Wailers, produced by Bob Marley & Lee Perry.

Linda McCartney recorded some tracks (Mr. Sandman, Sugartime) at Lee Perry's Black Ark Studio in 1978, though I don't know if they were ever officially released.

Another personal favorite track is "Miami Beach" by Garland Jeffreys (with Linton Kwesi Johnson).

Jack Miller also recorded some nice albums in Jamaica with JA's finest musicians.

What's your favorite reggae track or album recorded by a white singer?

Interesting response Jah Glu. And you maybe right.

Buuuuuuuuuuuuut...

How black does someone have to be to be able to 'do' reggae?

Is half black enough?

Just thinking of a certain Reggae Superstar with a black mamma and white daddy - Mr Robert Marley that is...

And: I know a certain member of this forum, MightyZ, very well. He's made some very very good reggae in his time, and still is making it (check out his work, it is excellent - and it's REAL reggae too.

And let's be honest here, there are many, many black people who aren't very good at reggae either.

Maybe it's a cultural thing, rather than a skin colour thing?

Dominic recorded in JA and appeared at some dances (from tapes I could hear), but there's nothing real great about him...

The French Pierpoljak recorded som tracks in JA, too, but, well... don't think much of him either...

Now, for some French white guys playing reggae but, as far as I know, not recording in JA, check the band that backed Horace Andy on some tours here a couple years ago (I'd say there's High or Home sth in the name, maybe Homegrown band) or Aspo and they do play excellent reggae for the former/rocksteady for the other...

That's just the singing that can't really cross borders. Jim Murple Memorial's singer has a good voice but it's not your typical reggae voice, more jazzy, but with an old-school rocksteady backing of good effect...

white man CAN do reggae, that's just the singing is harder...
