Guide a beginner in the art of roots reggae

Hello everybody! I have recently (as of yesterday actually) discovered this website, and I must say that it is amazing!

My heart has always been beating for the reggae genre, but only recently have I been affected by the roots reggae that I have had thirst to know a lot more than I do already (which is very little, hence why I ask you guidance.

You see, I was lucky enough to attend a truly amazing concert with The Congos just the other day. And they were simply brilliant! So I'm diffinately going to buy their "Heart of theCongos" cd.

What I ask of you is if you guys would mention a few artist that you think are either your favorites or pioneers of the roots genre, it would be appreciated if some of it were rather easily attainable.

I only know artists such as Burning Spear, Bob Marley and The Congos which I meantioned. Also I have heard a great deal about Lee Perry, as a musician and producer, So if I were to buy any of his albums, are there any "classics".
Unfortunately I'm a poor teenager so I dont have a fortune to throw around, but I sincerely hope you will help me out.

Thanks a lot everybody! I appreciate all of your responses, it is very kind of you, and I will difinately bring all of your lists when I go shopping in what probably is the only reggae specialized shop in this jahforsaken country, Denmark.

Oh yea by the way, if any of you could point out any prominent artists who promote homofobic views in their songs since I would prefer to get the stuff where I agree with the lyrics first. I can look away from it, if its really good reggae, but it still borthers me a bit
