Former child prodigy, Franklyn "Bubbler" Waul is a Jamaican multi-instrumentalist renowned primarily for his prowess on the keyboard. In a career spanning more than 50 years, Franklyn Waul has served as musical foil, arranger, producer, mentor and session musician for a legion of artistes, including, most notably, Dennis Brown, Black Uhuru, Sly & Robbie, Beres Hammond among others. Franklyn Michael Waul's initial interest in playing the piano was first piqued by the playing of a schoolmate at St. Theresa Preparatory School. Later, at Franklin Town Primary School, he received formal training from a music teacher. Waul emerged as a much in--demand studio session musician during the 1970s while still a pubescent Excelsior High schoolboy. He made his studio debut backing Dennis Brown on the track "Malcolm X," a song coincidentally penned by Excelsior schoolmate Winston "Electric Dread" McAnnuff. Impressed by his playing, which belied his youth, he was recruited by studio owner Joe Gibbs to form part of the resident studio band at Joe Gibbs Studiio. He simultaneously played the keyboards for Lloyd Parkes & We The People band. While doubling as the de facto A & R (Artiste and Repertoire) man at Joe Gibbs Studio, he auditioned and passed a slew of artistes including schoolmates Marcia Aitken, Wayne Wade, his classmate at Excelsior, Maddoo, Electric Dread and many others. It was while at Joe Gibbs Studio that he acquired the moniker "Youth Bubbler" courtesy of the late Inner Circle frontman Jacob Miller. Miller coined the nickname as a tribute to Waul's youthful effervescence while manning the keyboards. Over time, the nickname was shortened to just "Bubbler". Waul has played on an array of hits including Excelsior alumna, Marcia Aitken's cover of Alton Ellis' "I Am Still In Love With You". One of his most significant contributions was to the Boris Gardner-helmed "I Want To Wake Up With You" where his trap drums application and keyboard wizardry helped to propel the song to the top of the charts in Britain, Australia and South Africa. He also played a seminal role in the Grammy Awards winning projects by Black Uhuru, Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers and Sly & Robbie, with whom he toured for more than 30 years as part of their Taxi Gang aggregation.
